Massachusetts Representative Jake Auchincloss Speaks on Israel Vote and Other Key Issues

Massachusetts Representative Jake Auchincloss, known for his significant vote to cut off military aid to Israel last month, sees the pro-Israel lobby’s reaction as a sign of independence. Auchincloss, a Marine veteran serving the district with the largest Jewish population in New England, has been actively engaging his constituents about this decision.

Recently, Auchincloss spoke on Newsweek’s The 1600 podcast with host Carlo Versano to explain his stance. He emphasized the distinction between criticizing Israel’s current government and abandoning the country. Auchincloss stated that discussions with constituents have been constructive, having visited five temples to speak directly with the pro-Israel community.

Criticizing Netanyahu, Not Israel

Auchincloss stands among 103 Democrats and one Republican—Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie—who voted against continued military support for Israel. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) responded by removing his fundraising link from its site, a move viewed by some as a status symbol in Democratic primaries.

Auchincloss dismissed concerns about outside influences, asserting his positions are independent and sincere. He likened his role to playing contact sports in Washington, stressing the importance of resilience and focus.

Auchincloss clarified his vote as not indicative of a retreat from support for Israel. He highlighted a deep connection to Israel felt by Jewish families in his district, which often includes descendants of Holocaust survivors.

He expressed firm belief in Israel’s right to exist and defend itself from threats. Conversely, Auchincloss criticized the execution of the war under President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming it favors Iran.

Auchincloss vowed not to support measures that might foster another indefinite conflict in the Middle East.

While discussing his stance on Israeli policy, Auchincloss underscored the difference between legitimate policy criticism and antisemitism. He warned about a blurred line between fair criticism and bias, stressing the need for the Democratic Party to address this issue honestly.

Domestic Concerns and Broader Political Views

Auchincloss criticized former President Trump harshly, accusing him of weakening America’s global standing. He voiced concerns about Trump’s introspection regarding his legacy. Auchincloss rejected any peace that returns control of the Strait of Hormuz to Iran or leaves its nuclear program unchecked.

Auchincloss supported a Massachusetts ballot measure proposing small homes on 5,000-square-foot lots, part of his larger push to enable younger homeownership. He advocated closing the ‘buy, borrow, die’ loophole, which allows wealthy families to transfer assets tax-free.

Looking to 2026 midterms, Auchincloss emphasized addressing the cost of living and holding administration members accountable, citing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He ruled out a presidential run in 2028.

Auchincloss continues to engage with constituents through his newsletter on Substack while running for a fourth term representing Massachusetts’ Fourth Congressional District. His conversation with Carlo Versano is available on The 1600 podcast.
