Macklin Celebrini, despite entering his third NHL season, is already securing his place among the league’s top earners. The San Jose Sharks player signed a substantial five-year extension worth $94 million, set to commence in the 2027-28 season. This will earn him an impressive average annual value (AAV) of $18.8 million, positioning him as one of the highest-paid players in NHL history.
San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier was notably supportive of the investment, yet Celebrini opted to leave additional potential earnings on the table. According to Sportsnet, NHL regulations allow players to earn up to 20% of a team’s salary cap. For Celebrini, this translated to a possibility of $20.8 million per season; however, he took a lesser figure to ensure the team’s competitive edge.
“I want to make sure that with where the (NHL salary) cap was going, that the number made sense for the team first and foremost,” Celebrini expressed. “Ensuring everyone can be paid and we’re positioned well to build the team as desired. I believe we arrived at the right number. Maintaining flexibility for everyone is beneficial. I’m committed to this team and organization.”
This approach not only helps the Sharks stay financially agile but also supports potential competitiveness in the future. The additional $2 million saved will assist when the Sharks reach a more competitive level. Anticipations are high, with the Sharks possibly becoming an attractive free-agent destination in the upcoming years.
Last season, the Sharks narrowly missed playoff positions, and with rising stars like Celebrini, Will Smith, William Eklund, and Michael Misa, the team is set to increase its allure for new signings.
The Sharks kick off their preseason on September 20 against the Anaheim Ducks, followed by the regular season opening on October 1 at home against the Florida Panthers.
