This year, nine individuals have been diagnosed with this flesh-eating bacterial infection. Tragically, five of these cases have resulted in death. These infections are associated with exposure to warm seawater, where the bacterium thrives naturally.

In recent years, rising sea temperatures have pushed infections further north. Historically, Louisiana averaged seven Vibrio vulnificus infections and one related death per year over the last decade. The current data reflects a concerning increase in both cases and fatalities.

Officials advise those visiting the beaches to take necessary precautions, including avoiding contact with seawater if you have open wounds or weakened immune systems. This alert is crucial as the state continues to monitor and address the public health threat posed by this bacterium.
