Recent evidence suggests that GLP-1 medications, typically used for weight loss, may enhance male fertility. This insight comes from research presented at ENDO 2026, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Chicago.
Understanding Obesity and Male Fertility
Obesity is linked to fertility issues in men through the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This axis controls testosterone production, and its dysfunction can lead to functional hypogonadism and impaired semen quality.
WEIGHT-LOSS MEDICATIONS COULD IMPACT SEXUAL HEALTH IN UNEXPECTED WAYS
Research Analysis on GLP-1 Medications
Researchers assessed the effects of GLP-1 drugs on reproductive hormones and metabolic health. The analysis covered data from men aged 18 to 65 taking these medications, focusing on testosterone levels, brain hormones, and a protein that carries sex hormones in the blood. Metrics such as semen quality, weight, BMI, cholesterol, and blood sugar were also measured.
The systematic review of five trials indicated that GLP-1 medications might enhance testosterone, sperm quality, and metabolic health in obese men with low testosterone.
Trial Outcomes
A four-week study found that dulaglutide had no significant impact on reproductive hormones or sexual function. Conversely, a 16-week trial showed liraglutide improved hormone levels in obese men with functional hypogonadism. This medication appeared to offer better health outcomes compared to hormone replacement therapy.
Another study highlighted liraglutide’s positive effects on sperm concentration and count. It concluded that GLP-1 drugs might improve reproductive hormones and semen parameters.
A 24-week trial involving semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy) showed improvements in sperm shape and cholesterol levels, while maintaining testosterone levels.
Future Research and Implications
The limited number of trials underscores the need for further research. The current findings suggest potential benefits of GLP-1 medications for improving testosterone levels in obese men with hypogonadism.
Dr. Anthony Puopolo, a men’s health expert, expressed optimism about GLP-1’s potential to enhance fertility. He noted that GLP-1 medications could be a superior option to testosterone replacement therapy for preserving fertility.
