Community Initiative to Combat Gun Violence
On Saturday, the Bardwell Residences in Aurora hosted an event aimed at reducing gun violence, strengthening community connections, and promoting neighborhood wellness. The four-hour event, named ‘Lighting the Way to a Safer Aurora’, was organized by Project Safe Aurora. The Kane County Health Department led this initiative.
The event included live music, free giveaways such as Chromebooks, gas cards, biometric gun safes, and safety presentations. Elizabeth Nunez, a violence prevention specialist at the health department, highlighted the event’s significance. ‘This is part of community health addressing issues like violence,’ she said, emphasizing the impact of gun violence on individuals and communities. ‘Our coalition aims to foster community trust and awareness of available resources, promoting the safe storage of guns.’
Origins and Expansion of the Program
This program began with state funding through the Reimagine Public Safety Act. ‘We selected areas with high gun violence to build a coalition utilizing community-driven data and strategies,’ Nunez explained. The coalition now includes over 27 diverse organizations, such as law enforcement and youth development groups, collaborating on violence prevention.
Nunez has engaged with various neighborhood groups, raising awareness and shaping a community safety action plan. ‘Our strategies focus on data from the Aurora police transparency hub, tracking calls and incident reports,’ she noted. Monthly monitoring of gun violence incidents led to a partnership with the East Aurora School District to implement a restorative practice program.
Community Support and Engagement
Aurora Alderman Jonathan Nunez attended the event and acknowledged the extensive efforts behind this initiative. ‘Months of work have gone into this,’ he said, praising Elizabeth Nunez and the health department for their dedication to reducing youth gun violence.
Attendee Ilda Valdez expressed her interest in the project, stating, ‘I came to see what this project was about.’ She emphasized the importance of community awareness and support for local services. ‘Sessions like these help us understand gun control issues,’ she added.
