Las Vegas Raiders Enter 2026 with Promising Yet Complex Roster

The Las Vegas Raiders are approaching the 2026 NFL season with a refreshed roster. They’ve added two quarterbacks: Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza and seasoned veteran Kirk Cousins. Their defense sees new faces with linebackers Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean, along with edge rusher Kwity Paye and renowned center Tyler Linderbaum.

Moreover, the Raiders appointed former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as head coach. Under his leadership, the offense features Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty, and Brock Bowers.

The Raiders made headlines by trading for Buffalo Bills nickelback Taron Johnson. Initially, this move was praised as astute. However, the situation has shifted in three months, posing challenges before training camp begins. Johnson’s contract, as reported by ESPN’s Ryan McFadden, is a focal point. Although his contract runs until 2028, only $1.2 million of his $8.1 million base salary is guaranteed this year.

“The Raiders may need to revisit Johnson’s contract and add guarantees to satisfy both sides.” — Ryan McFadden, ESPN

Drafted in 2018, Johnson quickly became a cornerstone in Sean McDermott’s defense in Buffalo. His eight seasons there saw him achieve 572 career tackles, eight sacks, eight forced fumbles, six interceptions, and 48 pass breakups. Johnson is highly regarded as a top nickel cornerback, expected to carry his skill to Las Vegas following the trade.

However, Johnson turns 30 this July, seeking stability post-trade. Complicating matters, the Raiders just drafted Treydan Stukes, a versatile defensive back in the second round. Standing 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Stukes recorded 52 tackles, defended 10 passes, intercepted four times, and made one sack at Arizona last year.

Johnson remains the frontrunner for the nickel role. His performance in 2026 could increase his contractual leverage and cost. Conversely, rewarding him now might bind resources to a player nearing the end of his peak performance.

This situation was understated when the trade occurred, yet presents a strategic quandary for a team aiming to redefine its culture. Delays in resolving contract terms could exacerbate tensions.

This offseason complexity doesn’t cloud the Raiders’ ambitions, but it underscores the delicate balance of aligning player expectations with organizational goals.
