Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, remain non-working members of the royal family as confirmed by King Charles III. Following their return to the United Kingdom, a letter from the king to senior government officials reinforced that the couple will not use their royal titles, adhering to the arrangement since 2020 when they stepped back from official duties.

Any charity work they engage in will be conducted privately, with security arrangements left to relevant police agencies. The letter, issued by the Lord Chamberlain, addressed senior government and military officials, as well as lord lieutenants across the country. It emphasizes the need for clarity by stating, “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared.”

The public release of the letter underlines the palace’s concern about Harry and Meghan possibly establishing a parallel royal influence, which may compete with active royal family members. Security matters remain delicate due to Harry’s extensive dispute with the government over restoring publicly funded police protection, previously canceled when the couple resigned from royal roles.

Decisions regarding their police protection fall to RAVEC, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee. The Lord Chamberlain advised that inquiries from official entities on courtesies or public fund use involving the Duke and Duchess should be directed to Buckingham Palace.
