A new road bridge connecting Russia and North Korea was inaugurated on September 7, 2026, enhancing the relationship between the two nations. The bridge, crossing the Tumen River, is named after Yakov Novichenko, a Soviet officer known for protecting North Korea’s founding leader, Kim Il-sung.

The bridge spans 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) and features two lanes, accommodating up to 300 vehicles daily. It connects North Korea’s Rason and Russia’s Khasan, creating a direct link between the two border cities.

The inauguration ceremony was held via video link with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song participating. Mishustin expressed optimism about the bridge’s impact, stating it would enhance trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural cooperation between the countries.

“I am convinced that the expansion of transport infrastructure near the border will give a powerful boost to the further development of trade, economic, technological, scientific and cultural cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Mishustin said.

Pak echoed these sentiments, as reported by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency, labeling the bridge as a milestone for bilateral cooperation. The relationship between Russia and North Korea has been growing, with North Korea providing ammunition and troops to Russia in exchange for economic and military aid amid the conflict with Ukraine.

Since pandemic restrictions began easing in February 2024, Russian tourists have been visiting North Korea. KCNA predicts the bridge will further tourism, human interactions, and commodity exchange between the countries.

Plans for the automobile bridge began in 2024, complementing existing railway and air services between the two nations. Construction started last year, marking a significant step in Russian-North Korean cooperation.
