Two off-seasons ago, All-Star guard Kelsey Plum, after winning two WNBA titles with the Las Vegas Aces, requested a trade. In January 2025, she joined the Los Angeles Sparks.

Plum reflected on her decision during an interview with Sue Bird last summer. “I just remember thinking in that offseason, ‘If you really are about it, and you really believe that you are as good as you think you are, and you really think you can impact winning at the highest level, there’s only one way to find out,'” she said.

Determined to help the Sparks return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, Plum has pushed herself to lead. However, she faces challenges due to some questionable personnel moves by the team. This situation has opened up the possibility of her moving to another team.

Plum signed a one-year contract worth $999,999 in free agency. Despite her commitment, league insiders suggest that the 31-year-old guard has no plans to re-sign with the Sparks. Annie Costabile from The Athletic reported these insights from anonymous sources, given the sensitive nature of the discussions. Both Plum and her agent, Zack Miller, have stayed silent on her future plans.

“The WNBA trade deadline is Aug. 2,” Costabile noted. “Plum is seen as a high-profile trade candidate, though the Sparks haven’t initiated any significant trade talks involving her yet.”

Initially this season, Plum was the top scorer and a key offensive player in the WNBA. Unfortunately, injuries have restricted her participation to 12 games only. A sprained ankle in late May sidelined her for a week. Returning to the court, she played six games in June before suffering a lower left leg injury that has kept her out since June 24.

Historically, Plum has not been prone to injuries, which makes her a valuable asset. Whether the Sparks trade her or not, she is expected to attract considerable interest in the free agency market next offseason.
