On Monday, food influencer Keith Lee partnered with the Salvation Army and Gary’s local government to address the aftermath of a severe power outage in northwest Indiana. This outage lasted two weeks due to a series of extreme weather events.
The area faced winds reaching up to 100 mph during a storm on August 11, which uprooted sidewalks, snapped trees, and left a significant amount of debris. Lee, although residing in Texas, is originally from Detroit. He gained recognition for straightforward food reviews and decided to intervene after understanding the distressing situation. He originally planned a food tour but quickly shifted focus to aid the affected community.
On Monday, residents could access relief through drive-up or walk-up lines at Roosevelt High School. Volunteers distributed 2,000 kits containing cleaning supplies, masks, and trash bags. Additionally, 1,000 sandwiches and drinks were provided. Approximately $15,000 was donated by Lee for this effort, with Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton matching this contribution.
In addition to the disaster kits, funds supported food trucks set up in the school’s parking lot, creating a festival-like atmosphere with a live DJ and food booths.
Local officials, like Sylvia Martin, emphasized the collaborative nature of this event. Food vendors, along with community groups, coordinated swiftly to bring much-needed resources and joy to the residents.
Many local businesses participated, including Street Tacos NWI and home-based bakers like Cami Fuller. Residents like Christine Jones highlighted the prolonged power outages, noting a disparity in restoration efforts between Gary and nearby areas.
NIPSCO, the area’s power supplier, announced that power restoration was expected by Tuesday, following repairs on hundreds of poles. Residents like Jones expressed the challenges faced during this time, including difficulties in accessing food and essential items.
Despite these hardships, the relief efforts provided a moment of respite and brought the community together. Dora Rogers noted the importance of Lee’s presence, which has drawn attention to Gary’s situation.
The community’s resilience has shone through during this crisis, proving its strength in adversity. The efforts have highlighted the power of unity and the impact of social media in rallying support.
