Lake Zurich Hosts 13th Annual Rock the Block

The 13th annual Rock the Block event hit downtown Lake Zurich on Sept. 12. Clear skies and temperatures in the 80s created the perfect setting.

The event, free to the public, started at 5 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m. Three bands entertained attendees. The Ron Burgundy’s, a yacht rock band, opened the show. They were followed by Libido Funk Circus, who played pop hits. The night concluded with the rock band 7th Heaven on stage.

Food trucks and vendor booths lined Main Street. A large bar with high tables and a big screen TV served adult beverages. Many servers volunteered their time.

“It’s a perfect night,” said Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton. About 8,000 people attended Rock the Block.

Poynton launched the event in 2013 as a community builder when he was elected mayor.
“The main reason was to bring people to our Main Street area,” Poynton explained. “We’ve invested a lot in the streetscape. This creates a vibrant atmosphere.”

Nearly 100 volunteers contributed their efforts. “We couldn’t do this without them,” Poynton said.

Julie Austin, a former resident, enjoyed the photo stations and donned bright red sunglasses shaped with the word “Cool.” “I love it,” she said. “I’ve been coming every year.”

Families like Matt Mazur’s from Prospect Heights enjoyed time with their young children at the event. “It’s nice to have somewhere for kids,” Matt said.

Other families included Dreux and Emily Dillingham. They shared a picnic table with Arbin and Krity Shrestha. Their children enjoyed ice treats and barbecue. Emily praised the event. “It’s wonderful for the community.”

Arbin Shrestha expressed gratitude for the efforts of volunteers, acknowledging the work involved in making the event possible.
