Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary and a prominent figure in the “Make America Great Again” movement, will leave her position at the end of the month. President Donald Trump made the announcement on Wednesday. Leavitt returned to the White House following a brief maternity leave after the birth of her second child in May.

At 28 years old, Leavitt holds the distinction of being the youngest individual to assume the role of press secretary. In a social media post, President Trump commended her, noting she was one of his “most trusted aides.” He explained Leavitt is stepping down to focus on her family. She will transition to being a top adviser outside of the administration and will continue to influence the Republican Party.

Trump did not specify who would succeed Leavitt in this crucial position. Leavitt has a newborn daughter and a 2-year-old son. In her social media statement, she expressed that her decision is driven by her desire to devote more time to her children. Since returning to work, she felt the demands of both roles were incompatible.

“The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary — and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,” Leavitt stated.
