Investigation Request by Democratic Lawmakers
Democrats in the House are urging a federal probe into how Freedom 250 might use personal data collected from events for politically motivated purposes. Representatives Jared Huffman and Joe Morelle have formally asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine Freedom 250, a group linked to President Donald Trump and key to organizing the 250th-anniversary events of U.S. independence.
This petition follows an internal investigation by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee, focusing on Freedom 250’s operations and its collaboration with America250, a congressionally chartered initiative.
Focus of the GAO Investigation
The lawmakers’ letter to the GAO outlines concerns that data collected through Freedom 250 events might serve Trump’s political network, impacting the 2026 midterm elections. Huffman and Morelle seek clarity on the ownership and control of such data, and if there are preventative measures against sharing this information with Republican entities or Trump-aligned groups.
Data Collection Allegations
Attendees of Freedom 250 events reportedly submitted personal details like names and contact information during the registration. The investigation claims this data is managed through Campaign Nucleus, linked to Brad Parscale, a former Trump campaign manager. Parscale’s other company, Dyspatchit, supposedly runs communications for Freedom 250, and Ace Specialties handles merchandise, potentially accessing more customer data.
The lawmakers worry these activities might feed data into politically charged resources, enhancing voter persuasion tactics for upcoming elections. Freedom 250’s policy indicates data collection includes geographic and payment information, with vendors obligated to maintain confidentiality and adhere to strict usage purposes.
About Freedom 250
Launched by Trump in December 2025, Freedom 250 claims to be a “national, non-partisan organization” aiming to foster unity through 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence. Keith Krach, a former undersecretary of state, leads as CEO. The organization has faced criticism for sidelining America250, which is officially responsible for planning these historic celebrations.
Contrasts between America250 and Freedom 250
America250 operates under congressional guidance to help coordinate semiquincentennial events since its inception in 2016. In contrast, Freedom 250 was initiated by Trump to lead the major activities during the 250th anniversary, positioning itself as a separate entity with distinct goals and management.
Brad Parscale’s Involvement
Brad Parscale, noted for his role in Trump’s 2016 election campaign, founded Campaign Nucleus, a political engagement platform aiding Republican campaigning efforts. Allegations suggest Freedom 250 used Campaign Nucleus technology for event registration, raising flags about data sharing between governmental celebrations and political objectives.
Role of the House Natural Resources Committee
This committee, under Huffman’s leadership, oversees issues ranging from public land use to energy development. It has pursued an investigation into the federal funding and control dynamics linked to Freedom 250, spotlighting potential mismanagement around the significant anniversary celebrations.
