Kansas City Chiefs Await Patrick Mahomes’ Return for Season Opener

Three weeks before their Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football,” the Kansas City Chiefs remain uncertain about quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ readiness. Head coach Andy Reid shared on Monday that Mahomes is recovering well, yet it’s unclear if the two-time MVP will play.

“He’s doing great,” Reid stated. “We’ll just see. I’m taking it day by day. There are no predictions here. If doctors, trainers, and everyone involved gives him the OK, and if he feels ready, then we’ll address that when we get there.”

Mahomes has been optimistic about playing in Week 1. He is recovering from a significant ACL injury sustained in Week 15 last year. A start in the season opener would mean a nine-month recovery, considered fast for such an injury.

Some speculate Mahomes might be rusty upon return, but Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees believes otherwise. “I think there’s no doubt physiologically Patrick Mahomes is fine,” Brees told TMZ. He mentioned a mental hurdle Mahomes might need to overcome, stating, “I’m confident that the best of Patrick Mahomes is still ahead of us.”

Brees’ prediction is daring, considering Mahomes will turn 31 days after the season starts and is returning from major surgery. Questions remain about the Chiefs’ wide receiver lineup, with many analysts suggesting Mahomes will need to perform exceptionally for the team to reach the Super Bowl.

Last season, Mahomes had thrown for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions when injured. Notably, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has been replaced by Eric Bieniemy, under whom Mahomes had some of his best seasons.
