In an incredible debut, St. Louis Cardinals rookie Joshua Báez made Major League Baseball history by hitting home runs in each of his first three plate appearances against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. This historic achievement took place on Saturday afternoon.

Báez, 23, wasted no time making a name for himself. In his first-ever major league at-bat, he blasted a 450-foot two-run homer to dead center field, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. His success came on the first pitch he faced, a 93-mph fastball from Cubs starter Matt Boyd.

Báez’s second home run came in the fourth inning. He hit a 78-mph changeup from Boyd 382 feet into the left-field seats, putting the Cardinals ahead 4-3.

His third homer of the game, also off Boyd, was an 83-mph slider on the outside of the plate. This time Báez sent a two-run shot 368 feet into the right-field seats, giving the Cardinals a 6-3 advantage.

During these at-bats, Báez showcased his power by hitting to all three fields with different types of pitches. His remarkable feat left teammates and fans in awe.

In his fourth appearance at the plate, Báez hit a line out, showing that he’s human after all. By the ninth inning, the Cardinals were leading the Cubs 8-4.

Before joining the majors, Báez led Triple-A in home runs. The Boston native had impressive stats, hitting .256 with 34 home runs, 90 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases over 103 games. Drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Báez is expected to become a crucial part of the Cardinals’ young core.

The Cardinals, not pegged as contenders this season, entered Saturday with a 61-61 record. They were 3.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Cubs held the top Wild Card spot in the National League as they were trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by three games in the NL Central.
