Retired Detective Backs Scott Peterson Conviction

The attorneys, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Innocence Project (LAIP), shared findings in a two-part A&E docuseries titled “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence.” They argue these findings could critically impact the infamous conviction. Retired LAPD detective Ninette Toosbuy indicated that standard missing person protocols weren’t followed, fueling her belief that Peterson deserves a new trial. She stressed that a fair trial is a fundamental right in America.
Mother’s Firm Stance Against Claims
Sharon Rocha, Laci’s mother, stays resolute in her belief of Peterson’s guilt. Rejecting claims from the documentary, she maintains there is no new evidence to exonerate him. Prosecutors remain firm on their original narrative that Peterson murdered Laci, who was eight months pregnant, on Christmas Eve 2002, discarding her body in San Francisco Bay.
Conflicting Witness Accounts
The docuseries mentions 15 individuals who reportedly saw Laci walking her dog on the morning of December 24, contradicting Peterson’s account of leaving for a fishing trip. Chris Pixley, a defense attorney in the docuseries, argues that Modesto police dismissed these accounts and focused solely on Peterson. Pixley suggests these overlooked testimonies could have changed the trial’s outcome.
Burglar Theory Not Fully Investigated
Peterson’s defense argues that a burglary near the Peterson home on the morning of Laci’s disappearance wasn’t thoroughly investigated. A van found with possible bloodstains near the scene led them to theorize Laci interrupted a crime, resulting in her death. Toosbuy criticizes the authorities for not exploring this connection further. She calls for a complete investigation into any potential evidence found on the van’s mattress.
Debate Over Locations
The series also explores an LAIP expert’s use of Delft3D hydrodynamic modeling to challenge the claimed entry point of Laci’s body into the bay. The expert posits that the body could have been placed farther, questioning previous conclusions.
Ongoing Legal Struggles
Despite these claims, recent attempts to overturn the conviction have been denied. Stanislaus County District Attorney Jeff Laugero emphasizes the need for justice for Laci and Conner. Nonetheless, Peterson’s attorneys are determined to appeal to higher courts.
