Johnny Depp returns to the spotlight in his new role as Ebenezer Scrooge, garnering mixed reactions from fans after the “Ebenezer” trailer debut on Thursday. While many fans applauded Depp’s portrayal, skepticism arose over the film’s promotional tagline suggesting audiences should reconsider the classic story.
Some viewers noted that the storyline remains unchanged from past adaptations, with an X user commenting, “From the trailer I can confirm, it’s still the same story. It’s the same as Scrooge and Muppets Christmas Carol.” Others questioned the tagline’s purpose, with one individual asking, “Why is it marketed as revisionist when every single thing in the trailers is faithful to Dickens?”

Despite marketing doubts, fans eagerly anticipate Depp’s interpretation of the timeless Christmas tale. For many, the actor’s return to Hollywood signifies a fresh phase in his career. “So many have done this story and I still will watch it,” remarked one fan.
“Ebenezer” marks Depp’s first significant Hollywood film in years, following his appearance in the 2023 French historical drama “Jeanne du Barry.” He also directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness” and will star with Penélope Cruz in the upcoming thriller “Day Drinker.” Enthusiastic fans expressed hope for Depp’s revival, with comments like “Depp is back at the top of his game!” and “Exciting take on Ebenezer. Depp began his screen career with “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984, later gaining fame as Tom Hanson in the TV series “21 Jump Street.” His career soared with Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990, and his role as Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise led to his first Academy Award nomination. Additionally, Depp earned Oscar nods for “Finding Neverland” and “Sweeney Todd,” achieving a Golden Globe for the latter.

Nevertheless, Depp faced a challenging period due to personal and professional issues. Legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, including a U.K. libel case and a Virginia defamation trial, coupled with box-office disappointments, cast shadows on his career. The Virginia trial concluded with a jury ruling Heard liable for defaming Depp.
