The recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is facing issues, including vandalism allegations and rapid degradation. President Trump disclosed on Saturday that several individuals have been arrested for reportedly vandalizing the pool. This incident occurred amid significant problems with the renovation project, which cost over $14 million. As a result, part of the pool might need to be drained for essential repairs.
The president’s announcement highlighted the quick deterioration of the pool, which developed algae clouds over water painted in a shade he described as ‘American flag blue.’ The paint soon began peeling, attracting visitors curious about the unusual sight.
One of the accused is David Carter Hearn, a 67-year-old former Olympian in canoeing. Hearn explained that he was merely observing the site when he reached to touch a strip of peeling paint mixed with algae. This led to his arrest by the U.S. Park Police for allegedly destroying government property. Such charges could lead to a sentence of up to 10 years. Hearn denied any wrongdoing, stating, ‘I was just a curious, concerned citizen.’
No additional names of the accused have been disclosed, but the administration warned that vandalizing the pool could result in lengthy prison terms. Additionally, the president claimed, without evidence, that chemicals were poured into the pool, damaging it.
