Kuwaiti authorities reported that the strikes damaged numerous power generation units, ignited a fire, and necessitated the activation of emergency contingency plans. The fire has been contained.
In Kuwait, about 90% of drinking water is sourced from desalination processes. Comparable reliance is seen in Oman at 86% and Saudi Arabia at 70%. Desalination involves removing salt from seawater, often through reverse osmosis where water is pushed through ultrafine membranes.
Various desalination plants line the Persian Gulf coast, making them susceptible to Iranian missile or drone strikes. These facilities are critical; without them, major cities cannot maintain current populations. Desalination plants and their integration with power stations mean strikes on electrical infrastructure may impede water production.
Globally, concerns about the Iran conflict primarily revolve around rising energy prices. Conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has affected world markets, increasing oil prices. However, the threat to water supply infrastructure in Gulf cities is equally significant.
Iran has previously targeted desalination plants in the Gulf, including Kuwait’s Doha West plant. This attack arose from debris from intercepted drones and nearby port attacks. Iran has accused the U.S. of hitting its desalination plants, affecting water for 30 villages, though the U.S. has not confirmed these strikes.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels have also attacked Saudi desalination facilities amid heightened regional tensions. Desalination plants face risks from climate change, such as storm surges and extreme rainfall. This vulnerability increases as warming oceans heighten cyclone likelihood and severity.
If strategic desalination plants go offline, cities could lose most of their drinking water in days, leading to national crises. A 2010 CIA analysis warned that attacks on these facilities could trigger prolonged outages, lasting months if critical equipment is destroyed.
Approximately 90% of Gulf’s desalinated water comes from just 56 plants, making these facilities prone to sabotage or military actions. Their susceptibility extends to climate threats, further jeopardizing regional water stability.
The importance of maintaining these systems underscores the necessity for enhanced protection measures to minimize risks and ensure reliable access to freshwater in the Middle East.
