Bettina Anderson, wife of Donald Trump Jr., addressed recent claims that a Russian oligarch linked to Vladimir Putin financed part of their wedding. Anderson clarified that the funds covered separate celebrations, not the wedding itself.
A ProPublica investigation reported that Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, funded hundreds of thousands of dollars for wedding festivities, including a private island rental and fireworks, through a Dubai-based entity associated with IBA.
In an Instagram statement, Anderson explained, “Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding.” Anderson emphasized these events as a generous gift, devoid of political motivation. She asserted, “It’s unfortunate that something so personal can be distorted as political or sinister due to associations.” Anderson labeled the report “fake news,” stating, “NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY,” and shared weekend photos to present the truth.
Anderson highlighted that Kremlev’s contribution was distinct from the wedding, which was a private family occasion. Trump Jr.’s team corroborated Anderson’s Instagram response when contacted by Newsweek.
Kremlev’s Role in the Wedding Celebrations
Reports mentioned Kremlev paying substantial costs for Trump Jr.’s wedding events in the Bahamas, including a private island rental and a fireworks display. Payments were made via IB Challenger, affiliated with the IBA, led by Kremlev. Attendees noted the Russian delegation’s presence, though they remained primarily absent from released photos and videos.
Trump Jr.’s spokesperson affirmed Kremlev’s friendship, not business, while omitting any disputing of his financial involvement. Kremlev’s spokesperson reflected this description. Neither the White House nor Russian government officials responded to comments from ProPublica.
Background on Umar Kremlev
Born Umar Lutfulloyev, Kremlev changed his surname in 2010. With convictions for extortion and battery, he later joined a Kremlin-backed motorcycle club and formed ties with a Putin security official, leading to a rise in Russian boxing.
Elected president of the International Boxing Association in 2020, the organization faced money and corruption problems. Under Kremlev’s leadership, the IBA received significant sponsorship from Gazprom amid allegations of political ties to the Kremlin. In 2023, the IOC revoked the IBA’s recognition for governance and financial concerns.
Kremlev expanded beyond boxing, entering Russia’s sports betting and acquiring car dealerships post-nationalization. His public persona includes video content of luxury travel and celebrity interactions. He supported relocating Ukrainian children from occupied areas, drawing sanctions against his wife’s sister’s organization.
Amid sanctions on Russian businessmen post-Ukraine invasion, Kremlev relocated much of IBA’s operations to the UAE but is not on U.S. sanctions lists. He has strengthened connections with the Trump family, hosting events with Donald Trump Jr. despite geopolitical tensions.
