Investigation into Suspected Arson of Abandoned Homes on Turlington Road

Authorities in Harvey are investigating a fire that damaged multiple abandoned homes on Turlington Road as potential arson. The Harvey Fire Department disclosed that they have gathered evidence suggesting the fires may have been deliberately set. However, further forensic analysis and investigative work are necessary to confirm these suspicions.

The fires ignited at 2:30 a.m. on June 2 on the 15400 block of Turlington Road. Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control by 4 a.m. Fire Chief Howard Fisher emphasized the seriousness of such incidents and reassured residents that identifying those responsible is a top priority. He stated that the safety of residents, businesses, and firefighters remains paramount.

In the aftermath, electricians found a kitten amid the debris on June 2 on the 5400 block of Turlington Road.

The fire department is collaborating with state and local entities to aid the investigation. Fires initially engulfed two structures, from which extreme radiant heat and power line hazards caused the flames to spread to two adjacent abandoned buildings. As a precaution, ComEd temporarily cut power in the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Harvey’s financial distress led to furloughing about 40% of city workers, including nearly half of the fire department, in October. To address this reduction, they have relied on fire mutual aid from nearby communities over the last seven months.

Officials encourage anyone with relevant information about the fires to contact the Fire Department at 708-331-7720.
