The America250 initiative, a non-partisan committee focused on celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, has taken another step forward with the creation of a time capsule. Intended to preserve the nation’s identity, the project has gathered contributions from every U.S. state and territory. The time capsule will remain sealed for 250 years and be buried in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park on July 4, 2026. It will be opened on the same date in 2276, offering future generations a glimpse into America at its 250th anniversary.
According to Rosie Rios, chair of America250, the project aims to connect the past and the future. By 2276, future generations can witness the care, pride, and optimism Americans felt as they marked this milestone.

The time capsule was crafted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Maryland. It contains diverse contributions from the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. It also includes donations from figures in the three U.S. government branches and America250 Partners like Apple, Coca-Cola, and the Smithsonian Institution. Selected items reflect America250’s national initiatives.
Restrictions were put in place to prevent the inclusion of items that might rust, degrade, or rot. For instance, Maryland’s proposal to include Old Bay seasoning was turned down to prevent decay.
Among the contributions:
- Alabama: Poems by James Matthew Wilson
- Alaska: Archival map of New Archangel (1867), Alaska Territory flag (1927)
- American Samoa: Uncirculated coins
- Arizona: Copper ingots, state quarter, challenge coins, letters from state officials
- Arkansas: Diamond from Crater of Diamonds, letter from Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders
- California: AI-generated state prediction, fusion superconductor, various commemorative coins and official state items
Besides state and territorial contributions, America250 Partners have provided items such as an iPhone 17 Pro Max, a Coca-Cola bottle with lyrics, and a signed copy of the Constitution.
America250’s Tom Medema noted the hopeful themes emerging from the items. The creation of the time capsule has been an uplifting experience for those involved.
