ICE Agent Shoots Venezuelan DoorDash Driver in Austin

A 28-year-old Venezuelan, Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred during a food delivery service for DoorDash. It took place before 1 p.m. near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard in the city’s north side. Many details about the shooting remain unclear, but Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that local police were not involved.

During a Sunday news conference, Chief of Austin-Travis County EMS, Robert Luckritz, reported that Garces Perez sustained one gunshot wound to the torso. He was quickly transported to Dell Seton Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

Immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch identified Garces Perez. She informed CBS that he was delivering food for DoorDash when he was shot. She mentioned that Garces Perez contacted his wife while in severe pain. DoorDash confirmed his active delivery status at the time of the incident.

According to Lincoln-Goldfinch, Garces Perez was released from Dell Seton Medical Center on Sunday night. It is believed that he was subsequently taken into ICE custody. She shared with CBS that Garces Perez is married to a woman with legal status in the U.S. Though he initially entered the country lawfully, his current immigration status was not disclosed.

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson described Garces Perez as an “illegal alien” in a statement to Newsweek. The DHS stated that Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI are investigating the case. Garces Perez had a final order of removal and is now in federal custody awaiting deportation. His condition remains stable as more details unfold.

The public will receive updates as new information comes to light. Newsweek editors Tobias Meyjes and Tony Phillips are following the story’s development.
