Human remains have been discovered approximately 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s residence near Tucson, Arizona. This finding has quickly led to speculation about a potential connection to Guthrie’s disappearance over six months ago. However, authorities state there is currently no evidence linking the remains to the ongoing investigation into Guthrie’s case.
Investigators suggest the remains have been at the location longer than Guthrie has been missing, based on time-of-death markers. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced on X that deputies responded to reports of the discovery in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. Their statement indicated, “The remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time.” They reaffirmed, “At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.”
The discovery has attracted significant attention due to interest in the Guthrie case. However, such occurrences are relatively common in southern Arizona. The Pima County’s Office of the Medical Examiner investigates around 4,500 deaths annually. The county is also noted for having a large number of skeletal remains through its Indigent Interment Program, which aims to connect them with next of kin.
Chief Medical Examiner Greg Hess highlighted in a 2024 report by the National Association of Counties that the county maintains up to 600 sets of skeletal remains. This high number results partly from unidentified migrants who succumb to the harsh conditions of the Sonoran Desert while crossing the border. “We have more unidentified remains than other places, because of just the nature of the environment,” Hess remarked. He noted, “It’s really hot and dry and people die outside, and their remains are not protected from the environment. They’ll decompose and become skeletal remains relatively quickly.”
The discovery of remains near Guthrie’s home has garnered online attention as high-profile missing persons cases often amplify public interest in otherwise routine findings. Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home outside Tucson on February 1. Authorities suspect she was taken against her will but have not disclosed if she is still alive. No arrests have been made in connection with her disappearance.
This story is ongoing. Further details will be provided as they become available.
