An unexpected incident unfolded for Houston Uber driver Anthony Baines in the early hours of Aug. 8. While driving in the Houston Heights neighborhood, Baines encountered two police officers who, caught up in pursuit, sought his assistance.
The situation was captured on dashcam footage, revealing the urgency of the officers’ actions.
Hey, give me a ride over there please, the officer is heard saying.Go, go that way … go, go, go, go, go!
Baines, surprised but composed, asked for directions as the officers directed him to follow a shirtless suspect they were pursuing on foot. The video shows an officer entering the front passenger seat, followed by another officer with a flashlight who enters the backseat.
During the pursuit, Baines drove with the officers for several minutes. Ultimately, one officer spotted the suspect, prompting both to exit the vehicle and resume their chase on foot.
Reflecting on the incident, Baines stated,
It caught me completely off guard, and he had never experienced anything similar while driving. Despite the surprise, he followed the officers’ instructions as needed. The pursuit stemmed from police responding to allegations involving a terroristic threat. The suspect reportedly had threatened a woman and her children after accusing someone of theft.
Efforts to detain the suspect were initially unsuccessful as he fled from an apartment. Although Baines assisted the officers by driving them around the area, the suspect was not located, and his identity remains undisclosed as investigations continue.
Baines later confirmed his involvement via social media. He identified himself as the Uber driver featured in the dashcam footage.
Yep, that was me,he mentioned, describing himself as an Army veteran and father. He shared that he drives for Uber to save for his family’s first home.Houston police verified the incident’s authenticity.
