Flash Flooding in Grand Canyon Causes Water Restrictions, Missing Hikers

Severe flash flooding has disrupted a central water line in the Grand Canyon, compelling the National Park Service to enforce strict water restrictions while searching for missing hikers. The National Park Service will implement stage four water restrictions starting Monday at noon due to the extensive infrastructure damage caused by Saturday’s flood. This includes the Transcanyon Waterline, which provides water to the park.

Authorities report one fatality and estimate 15 individuals may be missing. The body of a 46-year-old male was retrieved from the Colorado River on Sunday night, though his identity remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, a missing Grand Canyon hiker aged 83 was successfully rescued after being separated from their companion.

NPS has issued a call for the public to assist in providing information about the missing individuals. They are seeking details from anyone who knows hikers or backpackers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, or who had a campground reservation in the impacted area.

Following the flash flood that occurred on August 29, all footbridges over Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, and park officials have evacuated at least 62 people since then. The stage four water restrictions involve dry camping with no water access, closure of overnight lodgings, and a strict prohibition of fires in the South Rim and inner canyon areas.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has indicated that state emergency officials are working in coordination with federal and local authorities to aid search efforts. Expressing her concern, Hobbs stated on X, “My heart is with the families and loved ones of every person unaccounted for after the flash flooding at the Grand Canyon.” The Arizona Secretary of State, Adrian Fontes, described the flooding as “devastating” and expressed gratitude toward the first responders aiding in evacuations and searches.

The physical damage from the floods includes destruction to a historic lodge near the bottom of the site. The environmental impact is considerable, affecting various parts of the park area.
