Violence Strikes During Holiday Weekend

Two NYPD officers were injured, and a mass shooting in Brooklyn left four children among the victims at a family barbecue. These incidents were part of a series of shootings across the United States during the Independence Day holiday.

Coney Island Barbecue Shooting

In Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, eight individuals, including four children, faced gunfire during a family gathering. The New York Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, revealed details at a Sunday news conference. An unidentified man, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, approached the courtyard’s fence and fired multiple shots before fleeing. Police found ten shell casings and a firearm with an extended magazine at the scene.

Commissioner Tisch stated there was no evidence of an argument or altercation before the shooting. Investigators are exploring a possible connection to a gang-related homicide on the same block earlier that week. Seven victims are expected to survive, but a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest remains in critical condition. The wounded children are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14 years. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his distress over the incident, labeling it as “heartbreaking” and emphasizing that such violence has no place in the city.

Officers Hurt in Crown Heights Incident

Later, a separate Brooklyn occurrence resulted in injuries to two NYPD officers in Crown Heights. The confrontation involved an armed 18-year-old suspect early Sunday. Officers, part of a violence-reduction deployment, identified the suspect carrying a firearm through surveillance footage shortly after 4 a.m. When the suspect approached an unmarked police vehicle, officers attempted dialogue. The suspect, however, fired at the vehicle, prompting three officers to return fire, according to Commissioner Tisch.

Though unharmed, the suspect was arrested after a brief chase, and a 9 mm handgun was recovered. Detective Robert Carroll was hit in the back of his ballistic vest and suffered bruising, while another officer received minor facial and shoulder injuries. Both are expected to recover entirely.

Nationwide Incidents

Violent events were reported at holiday gatherings in multiple states:

• Hilton Head, South Carolina: Seven individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries Saturday night near Coligny Beach. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office stated the shooting emerged from a physical altercation between two groups in a public beach access area around 8:20 p.m. Six people were detained for inquiry, and multiple firearms were seized. Investigations continue.
• Pensacola, Florida: A downtown shooting resulted in one fatality and five injuries early Sunday. Pensacola police reported multiple arrests at the scene following the incident, which occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Investigations are ongoing.
• Mount Clemens, Michigan: Five individuals, including two minors, were shot during a late-night block party Saturday. Macomb County sheriff’s deputies arrived following reports of gunfire near Court and Clemens streets at approximately 11:10 p.m. All five victims required hospitalization, and the inquiry continues.
