A rapid brush fire has expanded over 10,500 acres near Reno, Nevada, sparking evacuations and threatening around 1,000 homes. Governor Joe Lombardo of Nevada declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the Hawk Fire rapidly spread due to strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions, reported the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
About 400 firefighters, alongside local, state, and federal agencies, are battling the fire. They are working on the ground and from the air, utilizing three helicopters prepared to operate overnight to safeguard homes and properties.
“The Hawk Fire is a very dynamic incident driven by winds,” stated Richard Edwards, Chief of Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, in a social media video.
Fire officials confirmed that nearly 1,000 homes face an immediate threat from the Hawk Fire. They have ordered evacuations for the Somersett community, specifying areas north of Somersett Parkway to Robb Drive, and neighborhoods north of West 7th Street to North McCarran Boulevard.
Residents in approximately 1,000 homes received the status of “Warning — GET SET,” encouraging readiness for potential evacuation.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve emphasized the urgency for evacuations, confirming structural damage without detailing specifics. She reiterated that evacuating in advance allows firefighters to concentrate on controlling the fire, not rescuing residents.
“Your life is more important than a building,” Schieve asserted, highlighting the fire’s threat.
Governor Lombardo highlighted the rapidly changing nature of the situation and urged residents to remain alert and comply with official guidance.
Authorities are also vigilant about the fire’s proximity to a Washoe County correctional facility. Sheriff Darin Balaam assured coordination with fire and emergency crews, stating readiness to adjust operations if necessary.
“The safety of incarcerated individuals and staff is a priority,” emphasized Balaam, confirming ongoing response evaluations.
