Brandon Newsom, a senior Pentagon official, is no longer with the Department of the Navy. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced this Sunday. The announcement followed undercover footage showing Newsom criticizing former President Donald Trump.

Cao made the announcement on X, stating, “The individual is no longer employed by the Department of the Navy.” However, the details of whether Newsom was fired, resigned, or left by other means were not provided.

Earlier this week, Newsom had been placed on administrative leave. This followed the release of hidden-camera footage by conservative activist James O’Keefe. The video purportedly showed Newsom expressing criticism of Trump’s policies. Newsweek has not verified the authenticity of the recording.

In the footage, Newsom stated his intention to remain at the Pentagon to eventually undo policies enacted by the Trump administration. Newsom also expressed conflict with certain policies that clashed with his personal values, including religious services at the Pentagon and certain changes for federal employees.

Newsom described Trump as a “textbook narcissist” in the recording. He also criticized the conflict with Iran, calling it “completely stupid” and driven by ego.

Following the video’s release, Secretary Cao announced Newsom’s administrative leave while an investigation was conducted. Cao stated, “The Department of the Navy takes the conduct shown in this video extremely seriously. Such statements and apparent intent to leverage a position to undermine the policies and direction set by our elected leaders are inappropriate and incompatible with the standards expected of Department personnel.”
