Gov. Abbott Appoints Don Huffines as Texas Comptroller

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas named Don Huffines as the new state comptroller on Thursday. This decision is seen as an effort to unify the Republican Party before the midterm elections by aligning with its more conservative elements.

Don Huffines, a well-known figure in Texas politics, previously challenged Gov. Abbott in 2022, arguing the governor was not conservative enough. Despite this rivalry, they now aim to strengthen their party’s unity as Democrats prepare for potential political gains in the upcoming elections.

Huffines secured the Republican nomination for comptroller after defeating Kelly Hancock, the then-acting comptroller, and Gov. Abbott’s pick for the position. Huffines’ appointment occurs shortly after Hancock announced he would resign at the end of the month.

Gov. Abbott praised Huffines, citing his blend of business acumen and conservative values as key assets for the comptroller role. The state’s comptroller oversees public finances and is crucial to implementing the governor’s initiative of directing public funds to private education. This voucher program, which faces opposition from Democrats and certain rural Republicans, is set to launch in the coming school year.
