Trump Administration’s AI Model Restrictions Fuel Open-Source Movement

Under the Trump administration, significant restrictions have been placed on private AI models from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. These restrictions allow the government to control the release of models based on proprietary data held by single companies. This move is increasing interest in open-source AI models, which are accessible to the public and rely on freely available data.

Open-source supporters suggest this situation benefits China, known for offering more cost-effective, open-source models globally. AI experts argue that the U.S. needs more open-source development to stay competitive and not lag behind China’s offerings.

“Most enterprises are already operating in multi-model, multi-agent environments. They need a control plane they manage and, in some cases, own,” stated Felix Van de Maele, CEO of Collibra.

An example of the federal control occurred when the Trump administration gave Anthropic 90 minutes to retract its Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models, citing cybersecurity concerns raised by Amazon. Compliance with this export control resulted in the models becoming unavailable for over two weeks until the restriction was lifted.

This incident highlights how reliant private AI models are on government decisions. Such control can abruptly affect thousands or even millions of users. In contrast, open-source models reside in the public domain, allowing anyone to download, modify, and use them without external control.
