Before the New York Giants’ Sunday night game against the Dallas Cowboys, a major question loomed: Would star receiver Malik Nabers play? Though medically cleared, his confidence after last year’s knee injury was uncertain.
New Giants coach John Harbaugh saw an opportunity to help. Known for his unique approach, Harbaugh has won 13 season openers since 2008. Understanding his players’ needs, he decided Nabers needed a push.
During Saturday’s walkthrough, Harbaugh tackled Nabers himself to help him overcome the fear of getting hit. Harbaugh’s actions, while unconventional, set a tone and reassured Nabers and the team.
“I know everybody was worried about if I get tackled,” Nabers told reporters. “Actually, coach Harbaugh tackled me.”
Quarterback Jaxson Dart described the surprising moment, sharing how Harbaugh believed Nabers needed to experience contact to feel confident again. The coach’s intuitive move proved effective.
Though Nabers remained uncertain until hours before the game, testing his readiness confirmed his capability. He decided to play, acknowledging his regained assurance.
Nabers’ performance included six receptions for 69 yards. These numbers were crucial for the Giants as they signaled Nabers’ return to form, reassuring the fans of his readiness to withstand contact.
Reflecting on the game, Nabers expressed his relief, “It was amazing to take it all in, get right back on track to where I left off. I’m happy that the fans still love to see me out there.”
