Gavin Newsom Finds Inspiration in Bill Clinton

California Governor Gavin Newsom is drawing inspiration from former President Bill Clinton as he considers a possible run for the White House in 2028. Newsom shared his thoughts with Vanity Fair about fighting political battles, stating that he’s not afraid of challenges. He’s been through tough situations in California and is ready for more.

Newsom, nearing the end of his governorship, sees Clinton as a political role model, referring to him as a ‘master of his craft.’ Newsom keeps in touch with Clinton, often seeking late-night advice on policy and politics. He admires Clinton’s problem-solving skills, despite past controversies involving the former president.

Newsom acknowledged the shift in the Democratic Party, where more socialist figures are gaining attention. He describes himself as a ‘disrupter,’ someone who challenges the status quo and takes risks. Although he said he will not run in 2028 if Kamala Harris does, he is working on ‘Project 2029,’ a 36-page document full of policy ideas. These ideas cover various areas like zoning reform and corporate tax changes, focusing on practical solutions rather than narratives.

Democratic strategist Doug Friednash believes Newsom is smart to follow Clinton’s lead, warning that moving too far left could harm the party’s chances in 2028. Another strategist, Kaivan Shroff, agreed, emphasizing that Clinton showed how Democrats could appeal broadly without alienating traditional voters. Shroff noted that Newsom understands this lesson but faces the challenge of maintaining authenticity as a disrupter while being part of the political establishment for years.
