GOP Midterm Convention Highlights and Controversies

Donald Trump, during his recent address, described the event as the ‘first-ever midterm convention of any party.’ However, Democrats have hosted similar conventions before, notably in Kansas City in 1974 and Memphis in 1978, with President Jimmy Carter delivering remarks at the latter.

As Trump began his speech at the convention, the American Airlines Center in Dallas, with a capacity of about 19,000, had hundreds of empty seats, particularly on the upper level. Despite this visible gap, Trump commented that the place was ‘packed.’

The convention’s opening night saw numerous references to Democratic figures. Former President Joe Biden was mentioned 27 times. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper followed with 15 mentions, while Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia was brought up eight times. Hasan Piker, a left-wing Twitch streamer, faced criticism from multiple speakers. A video reel, highlighting Piker in various moments, was shown.

On a different note, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley was defeated in a Democratic primary by David Morales, who is backed by Bernie Sanders. Mayor Dan McKee of Rhode Island also lost his Democratic primary to Helena Foulkes, a former CVS executive, marking a notable shift in the state’s political landscape.

Cabinet secretaries like Attorney General Todd Blanche and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent received strong applause. Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee’s primary loss to Foulkes highlights a year where anti-incumbent sentiments have been prominent.

In an unexpected move, Democratic Senator John Fetterman appeared in a video at the convention. He praised Trump and Republican colleague Sen. Dave McCormick, emphasizing his ‘commonsense’ approach and repudiating extremes.

During the convention, Sen. Jon Husted criticized former Sen. Sherrod Brown over his time in politics, though Husted’s own career spans 25 years. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton insisted that losing Texas would mean losing ‘America’ and portrayed his opponent as a radical.

In other notable appearances, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman showed support for Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, while GOP congressman Mike Lawler underlined the importance of taking AI warnings about ending humanity seriously.

Trump’s statements about achievements and future promises included bringing gas prices below $2 post-midterm elections. He also alluded to considering a pardon for his former fixer Michael Cohen.
