Barwiolek Steps Up With Several Key Players Graduated
Senior forward Gabe Barwiolek knew the task ahead of him as a leading scorer for Geneva. With Caleb Kelly and Ben Murphy, who jointly scored 39 goals for the Vikings last season, now graduated, Barwiolek emerged as the primary returning scorer with six goals to his name. He understood the need to elevate his game.
“I don’t feel pressure,” Barwiolek expressed. “I know I need to have high expectations for myself, and I didn’t reach that last year. This is the year.”
Promising Start Under New Coach
Geneva’s new coach, Blake Hughes, began his first season by witnessing a promising start from Barwiolek. The senior forward scored three minutes into the game against Waubonsie Valley and later secured a penalty kick in the second half. This effort led to a 2-1 nonconference victory for Geneva.
The match was held at Waubonsie Valley, where Yasser Gomez scored for the hosts during the debut at their newly renovated Dick Kerner Stadium. Despite this, Hughes felt confident in Barwiolek’s capabilities, viewing him as critical to the team’s future success.
“He’s fantastic,” Hughes remarked about Barwiolek. “He trained overseas in Spain over the summer and he’s ready to play here. He’s a bright spot for Geneva soccer this year.”
Early Impact in the Season Opener
Barwiolek didn’t hesitate in the season opener. He capitalized on a free kick opportunity and struck quickly to score. In recalling the play, Barwiolek said:
“I saw a header and noticed the ball land at my feet. I heard ‘shoot,’ so I shot it with my left foot and it went in. It felt amazing.”
Waubonsie’s Gomez equalled the score later in the half, noted by Waubonsie coach Jose Garcia for his energetic and skillful play.
Barwiolek later converted a penalty kick, crucial for Geneva’s win. Hughes envisions many such performances from Barwiolek throughout the season.
“He’s technically savvy with the ball, aware of pressure, and knows where to move. It’s impressive to watch,” Hughes said.
International Training Enhances Skills
Barwiolek’s training in Spain through the Soccer Dreams Travel Pro Tour prepared him further. Reflecting on the experience, he said:
“It felt amazing, just getting that experience. This time was more memorable, being older and making new memories.”
His performance aligns with what Hughes envisioned, and the coach has high hopes for the season.
“He has to score 25 goals this year for us to have a great season,” Hughes commented, recognizing Barwiolek’s role in the predominantly sophomore team.
