Kaneland’s football team receives positive news as senior Rogan O’Neil returns stronger than ever, ready to take on his role as inside linebacker after an unforeseen surgery. O’Neil injured his shoulder during a game against Rochelle in Week 7 of the previous season.

“On the second play, my shoulder popped,” O’Neil recalled. Despite missing the next game, he finished the season in the playoffs’ second round. Initially thought as an AC joint sprain, later exams revealed a torn labrum and clavicle fragments.

O’Neil achieved a quicker recovery from physical therapy, regaining shoulder strength faster than anticipated. He plays a crucial role in positioning Kaneland at No. 6 in the Beacon-News/Courier-News preseason rankings. As a second-year captain and experienced defender, O’Neil is pivotal to Kaneland’s consistent playoff efforts, achieved 27 times in 31 years.

Coach Mike Thorgesen praised O’Neil’s passion for football, noting, “Rogan is a physical player who loves the game.” Despite occasionally playing fullback, O’Neil is valued primarily for his defensive skills.

In his sophomore year, O’Neil recorded 63 tackles with 10 for loss. Last season, he ended with 78 total tackles, second on the team, despite the injury.

O’Neil follows a path resembling his father’s, Steve, a high school linebacker for St. Charles and college player at Eastern Illinois until an injury curtailed his career.

About his football journey, O’Neil stated, “When I knew my dad played, I wanted it too.” Starting football in fifth grade, he moved to linebacker in seventh grade post a lost sixth-grade season.

Aiming for college-level play, he received an NCAA Division III offer from Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Coach Thorgesen noted O’Neil’s growth in play recognition, naming him a defensive leader. Other seasoned defensive starters include linebackers Jackson Slifka and Jackson Little, as well as linemen Jackson Valentini and Reiss Thompson.

Strategically, Kaneland faces the graduation losses of key offensive players like quarterback Jalen Carter and running back Carter Grabowski. Yet, Thorgesen remains optimistic, aiming for defensive strength early in the season.

Thorgesen expressed neutrality on the expanded playoffs format, focusing instead on expected yearly playoff participation. O’Neil believes the team holds steady standards, pursuing conference titles and playoff runs consistently.
