Julia O’Keefe, a freshman at St. Laurence, has quickly made her mark on the volleyball court. Her journey in the sport began at a young age, inspired by her father, Ed, a former setter at Mount Carmel when boys volleyball gained recognition in Illinois. Ed’s experience includes playing alongside notable figures like Donovan McNabb and coaching at the college level. This background contributed to Julia’s early start in volleyball, practicing diligently under her father’s guidance.

O’Keefe’s debut as a varsity player for the Vikings proved successful, with St. Laurence securing a win over Lincoln-Way West in a nonconference match. She demonstrated her skills by assisting on 15 of the team’s 18 kills, alongside contributing a kill, a block, and an ace. Her performance earned praise from teammates, including Aubrey Martinez, who lauded O’Keefe’s talent and expressed pride in her outstanding debut.

Julia’s sets and set-downs have impressed her peers, and her coach, Ellen Yopchick, recognized her potential early on. Before joining St. Laurence, O’Keefe played for St. Barnabas’ eighth-grade team, also coached by Ed. Her experience even includes winning the Diggin’ For A Cure Tournament at St. Laurence. Coach Yopchick noted Julia’s calm demeanor and high volleyball IQ, which enhances her ability to lead the team effectively.

The match against Lincoln-Way West showcased O’Keefe’s composure despite initial nerves. Her preparations during the summer included earning AAU All-American honors, a testament to her skill and team achievements. Julia expressed surprise at receiving the accolade, highlighting the dedication and teamwork that led to their fifth-place finish at a national tournament.

O’Keefe’s integration into the Vikings has been smooth, aided by the support from her older teammates, who helped her feel at ease on the varsity team. As she continues to develop her talents, Julia remains optimistic about her future with St. Laurence, grateful for the encouragement from her peers and coaches.
