James Bell: Rising Football Star with Versatile Skills

Senior running back James Bell thrives when carrying the football for Simeon. He focuses on the present and strives to impact the Wolverines’ performance. “I was born to do this,” Bell commented. “I’ve been doing it since childhood. My running style reflects my nature—aggressive, powerful, and strong.”

On a recent Saturday, Bell proved his capabilities. Known affectionately as “Baby James,” he amassed 215 yards and scored five touchdowns on 11 carries in a decisive 60-0 victory over Phillips at Eckersall Stadium in Chicago. Jalonny Billingsley, a sophomore receiver, contributed with a 42-yard touchdown via a punt return and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Aki King. King, also a sophomore quarterback, helped Simeon (1-3, 1-0) regain their winning momentum. Bell’s touchdowns were all over 30 yards, and he sat out the second half.

Corey Randolph, a senior lineman committed to Boston College, highlighted Bell’s leadership off the field. “His voice carries weight,” Randolph shared. “He’s a dominating player. His field vision is excellent and he sees everything. Right now, he’s performing above expectations.”

Billingsley described Bell as both dedicated on the field and entertaining off it. “He has great footwork and moves plays outside effectively. He’s a true leader,” Billingsley noted.

According to 247 Sports, Bell ranks among the top 50 state prospects for the 2027 recruiting class, alongside Randolph and Brian DeMoss, a defensive end. Bell received 16 Division I offers, including from national champion Indiana, Miami, Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona State. His father, also James Bell, excelled as a running back at Harper in the 1990s under coach Terry Lewis. Bell credits his father for his success. “My dad was my first coach and mentor,” Bell stated. “He inspired me and shaped my journey.”

Initially, Bell joined rival Morgan Park but did not play his freshman year due to a broken collarbone. “Switching was tough, but Simeon feels right for me,” he said. In his sophomore year, Bell learned the system and assumed a leadership role. “Now, I’m the main guy and it’s my time.”

Coach Sinque Turner praised Bell’s development and impact. “He always played above his age and has great contact balance,” Turner explained. “He opens opportunities for our receivers.” Bell, standing 5’10” and weighing 200 pounds, excels in both boxing and wrestling, enhancing his balance, footwork, and control. Off the field, Bell cherishes diverse interests. “Fishing is a bonding activity with my father,” he mentioned.

Since the third grade, Bell has been an avid chess player. “Chess makes me think critically,” he said. “I’m quiet generally, but outgoing with familiar people.” Turner believes Bell has exceptional potential. “He shined as a sophomore and further excelled last year,” Turner observed. “Baby James is indeed extraordinary.”

Bell aims to become a complete player by enhancing his receiving and blocking skills. “I’ve enriched my game this season,” he said. “I believe I can achieve anything.”
