Dan Campbell Reflects on the Essence of High School Football

Amid the changes in college football, high school football remains the last pure amateur level. With the new high school football season beginning, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared insights on what makes it special.

Speaking to young players, Campbell emphasized the unique bonds formed on high school teams: “You guys grew up together. Wherever you’re at, make the most of it because you may not get another chance to play and be with those guys you grew up with. Enjoy the game at that level,” Campbell advised.

Campbell, age 50, recalled the simple pleasures of high school football, like the smell of freshly cut grass and playing under the lights. “The wins, sacrifice, hard work, blood, sweat, and tears. It’s a special time. Enjoy it,” he said. The experience of playing high school football creates lasting memories.

He urged young players to commit fully to their teams, especially to support the seniors. “If you’re a young guy, you owe it to the seniors because this might be their last time,” Campbell encouraged. “So give them everything you’ve got and make it a special year for them. Next year, it will be your year, and you’ll want the young guys to support you.”

Campbell highlighted the fleeting nature of high school football, urging players to enjoy it while it lasts, as these moments become lifelong memories.
