The FIFA organization initiated an investigation following an altercation during Spain’s celebration after defeating Argentina in the World Cup final. The disturbance unfolded on the field with video evidence capturing a scuffle involving multiple players.

Among those involved was Argentina’s midfielder Leandro Paredes, who appeared to push Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. The situation escalated when Spain’s substitute, Gavi, attempted to intervene and was subsequently pushed to the ground by Paredes.

Spain’s captain, Rodri, was seemingly struck in the stomach by Argentina’s defender Nahuel Molina while running to join his teammates in the title celebration. Molina later confronted Rodri verbally, with former Manchester City teammate Nicolas Otamendi also being involved in the exchange.

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, along with other players, quickly moved to calm the tensions. FIFA released a statement indicating that its disciplinary committee has tasked a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor with examining potential breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code concerning these incidents.

“The brief statement provided no timeline for the investigation and did not mention Paredes specifically. Though he avoided a red card after the match, he could still face suspension,” FIFA remarked.

Spain managed a victory in the final, requiring extra time to secure a 1-0 win after Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card during stoppage time for the regulation period.

Notably, during the trophy ceremony, Argentina’s players stood with their backs to the podium while Spain celebrated victory, a rare act of disrespect despite Spain having provided a guard of honor for Argentina to receive their medals.
