FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been in discussions with the White House about the World Cup final scheduled for Sunday in New Jersey. This conversation comes as the tri-state area faces poor air quality due to Canadian wildfires, sources told Fox News Digital.

The talks were described as informal, with both parties monitoring the wildfire situation closely. No backup plans have been made to alter the game due to the current weather conditions.

The discussions surfaced first in a report by Sky Sports highlighting potential safety concerns. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the match on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.

Air quality issues have already impacted some sporting events. An MLS game in Chicago was postponed, and an MLB game in Philadelphia started an hour earlier than planned.

“If air quality is poor, Argentina could struggle against Spain’s playing style in the World Cup final,” noted a Fox analyst.

The Toronto Blue Jays have decided to close the retractable roof at Rogers Centre in response to air quality alerts. The World Cup final featuring Spain versus Argentina will kick off at 3 p.m. at MetLife Stadium. Argentina aims to achieve consecutive victories, a feat last accomplished by Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

In a previous instance in 2023, the New York Yankees postponed a game when the air quality index soared, reaching nearly double the current 150-200 range affecting the area this week.
