Federal Court Grants Freedom on Bond to Georgetown Scholar

Badar Khan Suri, a researcher at Georgetown University and a citizen of India, claims he was unjustly targeted by immigration authorities. He believes this is due to his family’s support for Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On May 14, 2025, Suri was warmly welcomed by his wife, Mapheze Saleh, at Washington Dulles International Airport. This reunion followed a judge’s decision to release him from a Texas immigration detention center.

Suri had been taken from his home in Virginia by federal immigration officials the previous year. Over time, he was transferred among different detention sites. This Thursday, a federal appeals court ruled that Suri could continue to live freely while on bond.
