Family Tragedy Due to Virginia Bus Crash

Four out of five individuals who perished in a bus crash in Virginia were members of a single family from Massachusetts. They were traveling with their car packed with desserts for a family wedding. The event will proceed on Sunday in South Carolina; however, it will also be a time of mourning for Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev and their two children, Emily and Mark, a relative stated on Saturday.

A son, a father—all the family—everyone dear to us, said Carolina Bublik.

The Doncev family lost their lives early Friday when a passenger bus collided with vehicles that had slowed due to road repairs on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia. A fifth person, a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, died in an SUV, authorities reported. Multiple individuals received treatment for injuries, including one in critical condition. Most have been discharged from the hospital, according to Mary Washington Healthcare.

A member of the National Transportation Safety Board planned to brief reporters on the investigation on Saturday.

The bus was operated by E&P Travel Inc., a company based in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Virginia State Police identified the driver as Jing S. Dong, 48, from Staten Island, New York. Dmitri, aged 45, and Ecaterina, 44, emigrated to the United States from Moldova in 2008 and settled in Greenfield, Massachusetts, Bublik noted.

Dmitri worked as a nurse at Holyoke Medical Center. Ecaterina was a stylist and spent days preparing desserts for the wedding, Bublik shared. Dimitri and his brother Iuri tried to stay together while traveling in separate vehicles to South Carolina.

At some point, they got separated, Bublik recounted. Dmitri told him, ‘You go ahead, I’ll catch up later.’ It was a great shock when Iuri arrived at the house. Dmitri should have arrived around the same time. When his car didn’t show up and he wasn’t answering his phone, that’s when the family began to panic.
