Extreme Heat and Drought Impacting Europe’s Rivers

Europe has faced exceptionally unusual heat and drought in recent times. A striking heat dome in late spring signaled the start of intense weather conditions. Since then, similar heat domes have persisted.

These severe conditions have transformed verdant landscapes into arid, dusty expanses. Major river systems have suffered, reaching record-low water levels. According to the European Space Programme, the Seine, Rhine, and Danube rivers are among the most affected.
