An explosion occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza in New York City on Monday morning, resulting in a fire and significant emergency response. Authorities have detained a suspect in connection with the incident outside the Lower Manhattan federal building, home to agencies like the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The FDNY reported that four individuals experienced minor injuries, none of which were life-threatening. Three individuals refused medical transport, while one was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

The FBI stated, “This morning, an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza. The individual has been taken into custody, and the FBI New York Office is investigating the incident.”

The FDNY received a call at 8:30 a.m. alerting them to an outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza, located between Worth Street and Lafayette Street. Responding to the scene were two engine companies and two ladder companies. The FDNY reported shortly before 11 a.m. that the situation is secure, and no departmental units remain onsite.

New York City Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani commented on the incident via X, stating, “What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing. I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody. My team is in touch with the NYPD, and we will support the federal investigation. Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city and hold accountable any who threaten that.”

Federal authorities have confirmed that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating the incident. As officials work to ascertain the cause of the explosion, no serious injuries have been reported.

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s prompt response, saying in a statement provided to Newsweek, “I am grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to stop an attack at 26 Federal Plaza this morning, for successfully apprehending the suspect, and for keeping the people of New York City safe. Acts of terror and violence have no place in our City and will never be tolerated. The individual responsible for this must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
