On Saturday, a truck filled with explosives detonated near a Colombian police station close to the Venezuela border, injuring at least 11 people. This incident occurred just six days before the inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella. The city of Cucuta witnessed the aftermath, where reporters observed flames and damaged building facades, with police, soldiers, and residents gathered at the scene.
George Quintero, security secretary for Norte de Santander, confirmed the casualties, mentioning eight police officers and three civilians were injured. He described the event as an “atrocious, violent act” and expressed regret over the incident.
Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the bombing and asserted that terrorism would not intimidate Colombia. Authorities are offering a reward exceeding $32,000 for information aiding the capture of those responsible.
De la Espriella, a millionaire lawyer supported by President Donald Trump, will assume office on August 7 in Cali. He aims to intensify efforts against guerrillas and drug-trafficking groups contributing to Colombia’s significant violence problem.
To achieve these goals, de la Espriella plans a military alliance with the United States and Israel. He was seen participating in a military parade in Bogota on July 20, 2026.
Outgoing President Gustavo Petro, the first leftist to hold Colombia’s presidency, was on a visit to Cuba and had not commented on the attack. During his trip, he discussed with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel the United States’ stance against Cuba and the Trump administration’s actions against alleged drug trafficking in the Caribbean.
The new government represents a shift in Colombia’s politics, as the previous left-wing administration unsuccessfully sought peace with armed groups and took a different approach to drug trafficking.
Traditionally, presidential inaugurations are held in Bogota, but De la Espriella requested it in Cali, a region with significant conflict involving drug-trafficking gangs and guerrillas. The ceremony will see around 11,000 security personnel ensuring safety.
De la Espriella initially wanted to be sworn in at a military site in Cauca, but Petro did not approve. Various guerrilla groups have criticized de la Espriella, who plans to terminate ongoing peace talks initiated by Petro.
The election period was fraught with violence, including explosive attacks and political assassinations. In 2025, Miguel Uribe Turbay, a right-wing candidate, was fatally shot at an event in Bogota. De la Espriella has also spoken of threats to his life.
