Exploring the Challenging Waters of the Andrea Doria Shipwreck

Some 240 feet beneath the ocean lies a hazardous shipwreck that divers have termed the “Mount Everest of shipwrecks.” This formidable wreck, located off the U.S. coast, challenges even expert divers. Retired U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport noted the significant difficulties faced by those who dare to explore the depths.

After 70 years under the Atlantic, the Andrea Doria is becoming increasingly dangerous as it deteriorates. Longtime explorer John Moyer, with over 100 dives to his name, observed in 2022 that the steel hull was collapsing and entering its ‘final stage’ of collapse, making it risky for divers.

The wreck’s depth and unforgiving conditions leave little room for error.

The Andrea Doria famously sank after a collision with the Swedish liner Stockholm off Nantucket, Massachusetts, in July 1956. Despite the tragedy, more than 1,600 passengers and crew were rescued, though 52 people perished. A desire to explore and recover artifacts continues to attract divers to this day, although at a great risk.

The Divers Alert Network reported that, as of 2016, 17 scuba divers had died while exploring the wreck. The depth and complexity of the dive pose significant challenges, such as navigating through nets and debris.

Risks and Rewards

While the Andrea Doria holds considerable allure, it is not for the faint-hearted. Davenport, an experienced diver, explained that access to the wreck does not require a submarine, unlike deeper wrecks such as the Titanic. However, he stressed the importance of extensive experience and preparation for those looking to explore it.

The wreck’s layout complicates dives. The ship rests on its side, causing staircases and corridors to appear sideways, which can confuse divers. There is also the constant risk of entanglement in nets and debris.

Davenport advised that only those with significant diving expertise and the right preparation should attempt these dives. With nearly 70 years passing since its sinking, the Andrea Doria remains a draw for those eager to experience its mystery while they still can.
