Carson Hocevar: Redefining the NASCAR Image
Carson Hocevar represents a new breed of NASCAR drivers. He differs significantly from the legends of the past like Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, and more recent stars like Tony Stewart. Some say he is the closest we’ve come to Jeff Gordon since Gordon himself.
Hocevar, 23, is changing the game in a notable fashion. Although he has one career Cup win—achieved at Talladega this year—he leads the series in merchandise sales. Last year, he did not break the Top 30.
“My mom was more excited about me going to the Met Gala than my win at Talladega,” Hocevar mentioned.
Hocevar’s Social Media Impact
The young driver has surprised many by soaring in popularity, driven by strong social media engagement.
Driving the No. 77 Chili’s Ride the ‘Dente Chevrolet, Hocevar made waves before the NASCAR Cup Series Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“I laugh about the attention—both good and bad—from social media,” Hocevar said. Remarkably, he spent the night before his Talladega victory driving $500 cars at a friend’s place. His laid-back attitude contrasts sharply with his on-track success.
Fans and critics are crafting narratives. “People want reasons; they don’t accept circumstances,” Hocevar said.
Hocevar’s Fame Off the Track
This summer, Hocevar’s popularity received an additional boost from his association with influencer Tabitha Swatosh. She has over 15 million TikTok followers and shared their interactions, garnering immense attention. Both were spotted on the starting grid before the Brickyard 400.
Hocevar faced a challenging August, finishing 31st, 37th, 19th, and 38th after a crash at Daytona. Simultaneously, Swatosh stirred controversy by wearing heels to a race, ruffling some feathers.
“Not a very good day,” Denny Hamlin said on his podcast ‘Actions Detrimental’ after Hocevar’s wreck in New Hampshire.
Even Kevin Harvick weighed in, saying drivers need to focus less on external distractions like “TikTok girlfriends” and more on driving. “No one cares if your car isn’t fast despite off-track fame,” Harvick noted.
NASCAR’s Investment in Hocevar
NASCAR is strategically promoting Hocevar. Despite fan disdain expressed in a press release titled “Does Everyone Hate Carson Hocevar?”, his sales numbers are the best among drivers this year.
NASCAR noticed his merchandise success and wants him center stage during big events like the Coke Zero Sugar 400.
“There’s a big push for Carson Hocevar,” Hocevar explained. An interview invitation exemplifies this push; NASCAR wants him visible.
“Sometimes people try to wreck me and end up wrecking themselves,” Hocevar said about Chicagoland events.
With significant talent and an appealing persona, Hocevar aims for the Cup championship. As the season progresses, all eyes remain on him.
