Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers recently experienced a unique cultural exchange in Australia, learning about local slang during his team’s visit. His encounter with Australian terminology took place during a routine haircut.
“I was getting a haircut a few days ago and one of the barbers looks at me and says, ‘Looks cracker,’” McCaffrey shared at a postgame press conference.
McCaffrey, familiar with ‘cracker’ often being a derogatory American term, was surprised to find it used positively by the barber. The term in Australia signifies something really good or impressive.
During the press conference, teammates George Kittle and Deebo Samuel laughed as McCaffrey recounted the amusing misunderstanding. He explained, “I didn’t know what it meant, I guess that means it looks good. But that was funny.”
“He said (cracker) again, I said, ‘Dude, I hear that every Sunday.’ That was good, we had a good moment. I enjoy all the slang,” McCaffrey added, smiling.
The 49ers had plenty to celebrate after their 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night in Melbourne. McCaffrey performed well, carrying the ball 10 times for 68 yards and catching five passes for 20 yards.
Rookie running back Kaelon Black also contributed significantly, handling 14 carries for 65 yards, ensuring McCaffrey stayed healthy for future games.
Following their success both on the field and in cultural learning, McCaffrey and the 49ers will head back to the U.S. to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
