In Alexandria, Va., David J. Rush, a former senior CIA official, is currently under detention awaiting trial. He has been accused of amassing more than $40 million in gold bars at his Virginia residence, a claim leading to his continued incarceration. U.S. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick stated that Rush’s professional background equips him with both the means and motive to flee while the trial is pending. Due to his experience, he poses a risk of evading law enforcement.
Rush faces charges related to the fraudulent acquisition of tens of thousands of dollars in military leave compensation after his 2015 discharge from the U.S. Navy. Authorities arrested him following a search of his home, where they found over 300 gold bars, approximately $2 million in U.S. currency, and around 35 luxury watches. These details are part of an affidavit from an FBI agent.
Defense attorney Jessica Carmichael contended that the gold bars do not pertain to any of Rush’s charges, describing them as insignificant and merely sensational. She asserted that Rush legitimately obtained and securely stored the gold bars in a basement safe. Carmichael stressed that Rush never claimed ownership of the bars.
According to the FBI, between November and March, Rush requested a substantial amount of foreign currency and millions in gold bars for work expenses. Justice Department prosecutor Gavin Tisdale highlighted that Rush was not authorized to keep the gold bars at his residence. He stated that the issue lies in Rush’s disregard for rules and regulations. Tisdale indicated that the case against Rush is strengthening continuously, claiming Rush cannot be trusted to comply with court conditions.
The court records reveal that Rush enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy Reserves as a lieutenant in 2015. Investigations allege that Rush provided false information regarding his education and military history on job applications, including claims of being a former Navy pilot and holding degrees from Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Investigators found no evidence of his service as a Navy pilot or attendance at these institutions.
